This Durham Light Infantry memorial is located in the grounds of The Bowes Museum, Barnard Castle, County Durham. The stone memorial is composed of a tapering three-stepped octagonal base and square plinth, surmounting the plinth is a shaft and cross. On the plinth is a wreath carved in relief which contains the memorial’s inscription in the centre. The base of the memorial is bordered by a single row of cobbles. The memorial is Grade II listed and located within a conservation area.
In 2009, War Memorials Trust gave a grant of £1034 through the Small Grants Scheme towards the cleaning of the plinth and shaft with water and non-metallic brushes to remove the biological growth, and a biocide was applied to delay its re-growth. The defective joints on the memorial were raked out and re-pointed with a hydraulic lime mortar mix to match the original in colour and strength. The cobbles which surround the memorial were re-bedded when present, and new cobbles were supplied to replace the missing ones. The faded inscription on the memorial was re-cut.
This memorial was unveiled on 9th July 1921 by the Earl of Durham and was dedicated by the Bishop of Durham.
The inscription on the memorial reads:
