The memorial standing near the west door of St Mark’s church in Worsley, Manchester, is a Cornish granite cross fleury on a slim pillar which stands on an octagonal plinth and a three-stepped base. The top two steps are octagonal, the lowest is a shallow square. The memorial stands in a square gravelled area surrounded by a stone kerb. The plinth has moulding above and below, and the names of the fallen are inscribed around its faces.
In 2008/9 English Heritage and the Wolfson Foundation gave £1,075 towards work to clean the memorial, remove the paint from the lettering, replace worn or damaged letters and re-black all letters, rake out and re-point joints and clean the surrounding area and kerbs.
The dedication reads
"Remember
before God
the gallant dead
whose names
are written here
though many lie
in other lands
They fell
in the Great War
1914 – 1919"
The memorial was unveiled on Sunday 10th April 1922 by the Earl of Ellesmere.
