This World War I paper war memorial is for the Bolton Grand Division of the Order of the Sons of Temperance. It is heavily illustrated with pen and ink including the flags and crests of the allied nations in the border; it is mounted in an oak frame. The oak frame has crenellated detailing across the top and classical columns carved on either side.
It was previously located at a local Temperance office and was donated to Bolton Museum when it closed; it is to be displayed in Bolton Town Hall.
War Memorials Trust offered a grant of £261 for improvements to the glazing to protect the memorial. Laminated safety glass with a 99% UV filter was installed in place of the current glazing; this will protect the memorial from UV rays and the associated fading of the memorial which was already becoming evident. Furthermore, this glass will protect the memorial and members of the public if the glass were to be broken.
This memorial was produced by a local artist and framer; W. A. Kelsall.
Part of the inscription on the memorial reads:
Roll of Honour
Bolton Grand Division of the Order of the Sons of Temperance
In affectionate remembrance of the members of this District Branch who bravely made the supreme sacrifice in the Great War, 1914 - 1919. For right, for King and Country.
