This war memorial is a white marble cenotaph with carved reliefs of a laurel wreath and flags, set upon granite steps. It is located in Bargate, Grimsby, Lincolnshire.
Over time the white marble had become covered with algae and pollution. There were also open joints where mortar had failed. War Memorials Trust gave a grant of £1935 to clean the stone with water and soft bristle brushes and repoint the joints with lime mortar. Unfortunately, nothing could be done to improve the hairline cracks covering the monument as these are caused by internal stresses of the structure.
There had originally been a wooden cenotaph on the site in 1919 which was a model to demonstrate how the stone version would look.
The inscription reads:
In memory of
those who died
Pro patria
1914-1918
1939-1945
MCMXIV-MCMXVIII
MCMXXXIX – MCMXLV
