The war memorial takes the form of a lychgate which stands outside Cummertrees Church. It is made of oak, with half-height red sandstone walls and a steeply pitched red clay tiled roof. The lychgate is a category C (S) listed building.
In 2007, War Memorials Trust offered a grant of £1,500 towards repairs necessary to the memorial to restore it to its original condition. Work included the decaying timber being replaced with home grown green oak, the installation of damp course for to help prevent future problems and the treatment of the wood.
The lychgate was constructed in the 1920s with oak supplied by Colonel Charles Brook whose family owned the Hoddom and Kinmount estates. The memorial was paid for by the Kirk Session of Cummertrees Parish Church. It was unveiled by Major William Murray OBE of Murraythwaite, then MP for Dumfriesshire.
There are no names inscribed on the lychgate. These are recorded on plaques on the wall of the church visible in the photograph.
An inscription over the gate reads
This gate is a tribute to all those of this Parish
who served in the World Wars 1914-19 ~ 1939-45.
