This memorial is located on Green Street, next to Cedars Recreation Ground, Sunbury, Surrey. It is a Portland stone cross standing on base of white marble sitting on York stone steps. There is a leaded lettered inscription on the marble base and relief carvings of laurel wreaths. There is also a crusader sword on the cross.
War Memorials Trust gave a grant of £450 for works to this memorial. These included steam cleaning to remove pollution deposits and re-pointing of open joints with lime mortar. The memorial was also treated with a biocide to inhibit future algae growth.
Little is known about the history of this memorial apart from that it was dedicated in 1920.
The inscription reads:
1914 - 1919
This memorial
commemorates those Sunbury men
who, at the call of King and Country
left all that was dear to them, endured hardness, faced danger, and finally
passed out of the sight of men by the
path of duty and self sacrifice,
giving up their own lives that others
might live in freedom.
Let those who come after see to it
that their name be not forgotten.
To commemorate
those who fell
1939 - 1945
and in
subsequent engagements.
