The war memorial in Pelton Fell, near Chester-le-Street, County Durham, is a park; wrought iron gates, marked with the dates 1914 and 1919, open onto the park which was created from land bought from a private estate. There is a memorial monument within the park (WM3484). The park also contains a bowling green with pavilion and a bandstand.
In July 2000 War Memorials Trust gave a grant of £150 towards the costs of a new pavilion for the Pelton Fell War Memorial Park Bowling Club.
The new pavilion was officially opened on 16 June 2002.
The decision to construct a cenotaph and park (which was to be laid out with a bandstand, bowling green, plants and paths) as a memorial was taken in December 1920, earlier plans to include a swimming pool having been abandoned due to cost. The cenotaph was built in 1922. It was designed by A H Fennell of Chester-le-Street and built by Messrs Alex Pringle of Gateshead and Newcastle-upon-Tyne. The memorial was unveiled in a ceremony on Saturday 22nd July 1922. Sir Horace Plunkett KCVO FRS DCL officially unlocked the gates of the War Memorial Park and unveiled the memorial after inspecting a guard of honour composed of ex-service men, ex-service St. John’s Ambulance Brigade men and Boy Scouts. The memorial was dedicated by Dr. J.N. Quirk, Bishop of Jarrow. The Last Post was played and a two minute silence held, after which brief addresses were given by minsters of various denominations. Wreaths were laid during hymn “O God Our Help in Ages Past.”
