The Bergh Apton war memorial is located in St Peter and St Paul’s churchyard in Bergh Apton, south east Norfolk. It consists of a gable cross with tracery-style carving between the arms of the cross, standing on a pillar on a plinth with a two-stepped octagonal base. The names of the fallen are inscribed around the plinth.
In 2006 War Memorials Trust offered a grant of £218 towards the costs of adding new names to the war memorial. These names were obtained by research that showed that for various reasons the individuals had previously been omitted from the war memorial.
At the same time the memorial was in receipt of a grant of £1100 from English Heritage and War Memorials Trust. This was towards work to clean the memorial, consolidate the stonework, rake out and re-point open and eroded joints, apply a shelter coat, repair a fissure to an upper chamfer of the plinth and to re-cut some of the lettering that was becoming illegible.
The dedications on the memorial read
In memory
of the men of
Bergh Apton
who fell in
the Great War
1914-1918
May they
rest in peace
They gave their
lives to serve
their God
their king and
their country
in defence of
truth liberty
and justice.
The memorial was originally unveiled on 28th May 1920. Names of those who fell in World War II were added some time after 1945. After the recent work was finished on the memorial a re-dedication ceremony was held on 25 May 2007.
