Uig war memorial © J Kyle, 2009The war memorial in the village of Uig on the Isle of Lewis in the Outer Hebrides is a broad tapering stone pillar on a double plinth topped by a block of stone with badges of the services engraved on the faces. There are metal plaques on two sides of the memorial commemorating the fallen of both world wars. The memorial is located on an elevated site near the primary school, on a paved area behind a metal fence.

In February 1999 War Memorials Trust gave £175 towards the commissioning of this new memorial.

On the metal plaques on the memorial the fallen are listed under headings of the villages from which they came; the villages are

  • Kneep (1914 -1918),
  • Reef (1939 – 1945),
  • Uigen(1939 – 1945),
  • Valtos (1914 – 1918 and 1939 – 1945),
  • Aird Uig (1914 – 1918) and
  • Crowlista (1914 – 1918 and 1939 – 1945).

Uig war memorial © J Kyle, 2009The names, ages, regiments and year of death of all the fallen are given. The memorial also commemorates those from local villages who died in the Iolaire disaster of 1st January 1919, when HMY Iolaire foundered on the Beasts of Holm and two hundred men lost their lives within sight of Stornoway Harbour.
