The war memorial in the village of Henstridge, in south east Somerset, is a slim obelisk on a plinth on a four-stepped base. A laurel wreath is carved in half relief near the top of the obelisk and further down is a half relief carving of a lowered flag leaning at an angle, with its pole “resting” on the top of the plinth. Beside this is a decoration of oak leaves carved in relief on the front face of the obelisk. There is a World War I dedication inscribed on the front of the plinth and names of the fallen of that conflict are carved into the two side faces of the plinth. World War II dates and names are carved into the front face of the top two steps. The memorial stands on Sherbourne Road.
In October 2001 War Memorials Trust gave a grant of £250 towards work to clean the stone and apply biocide, re-point where necessary and repaint the incised lead lettering. The pillars and chain surrounding the memorial were also cleaned and repaired.
The inscription on the front of the plinth reads
Sacred
to the memory of
the men of
Henstridge
who gave their lives in the
Great War
1914 – 1918
The memorial was unveiled by local dignitaries on 10th July 1922.
Before the work was carried out the name of the village on the memorial was almost illegible. A local individual remembers the name of the village being painted out as a security measure, so is quite possible that this was a precaution carried out during World War II.
