Chevington and Broomhill war memorial stands in the grounds of St. John’s Church, Hadston, Northumberland. It takes the form of a stone cross on a tapering column set on a two-stepped plinth on a tall base. There are shallow steps at the bottom of the base. Laurel wreaths are carved in relief around the top step of the plinth. Shields bearing the words 'Dulce et decorum est pro patria mori' are fixed to the lower step of the plinth.
In 2003 War Memorials Trust gave £150 towards work to improve access to the memorial. As the memorial was behind a low stone wall, access to lay wreaths was becoming difficult as veterans aged. Remedial work was undertaken to remove part of the stone wall in front of the memorial to form a ramp to enable wheelchair access to the memorial, to relay the paved area in front of the memorial and to replace the iron rail around the site.
The memorial was designed and sculpted by J P Whittle and was unveiled in November 1921 by Fred Hemsley who had served as a private soldier in the Great War. There is a plaque on the front of the base of the memorial which reads
To the Glory of God
and in memory of
the men of
Chevington
and
Broomhill district
who fell in
the Great War
1914 – 1918
On the opposite face are carved the words
Lord God of Hosts
Be with us yet
Lest we forget
Lest we forget
The names of the men commemorated from the First World War are on plaques on the north and south faces of the base and the names of those from the Second World War are below these on a plaque on the steps at the bottom of the memorial.
