Churwell war memorials are bronze tablets set in a stone wall by the roadside on Elland Road. The wall surrounds the Memorial Gardens with the World War I plaque (WM3330) on the outside and the World War II plaque (WM1330) which this information relates to on the inside of the wall within the memorial gardens. Churwell is within the town of Morley near Leeds.
The First World War plaque required cleaning and alongside this work the local community sought to erect a memorial to the Second World War on the reverse of the wall which carried the First World War plaque. In 2004 War Memorials Trust contributed £200 to the creation of the new World War II memorial.
By bringing a memorial inside the gardens the community could now gather for services within the garden rather than around the First World War plaque which led to problems with people spilling onto the roads.
