A war memorial plaque is attached to the Shakespeare Hotel on Castle Street in Stratford-upon-Avon.
War Memorials Trust was alerted to the Cotswold Stone plaque having deteriorated in 2000. Through correspondence with the Shakespeare Hotel it was proposed that the plaque be replaced with a slate plaque inscribed with identical lettering to the original. War Memorials Trust made a grant of £250 in 2003 to the replacement with the hotel funding the remaining costs.
The plaque reads:
"This stone was laid
by
Sir Frank R. Benson
(Freeman of the Borough)
on March 12th 1920
at the request of
the Justins family
by whom this building
was restored
in memory of
the gallant men
of Stratford on Avon
who made the
supreme scarifice for
King and country
in the
Great War
1914 - 1918"
