The Grade II listed war memorial in the Suffolk market town of Sudbury is a tall ashlar Portland stone cross on a three-stepped octagonal plinth on a base. There is a down-pointing bronze sword on the cross. On the plinths are bronze plaques bearing the names of the fallen of both world wars as well as dedications. The memorial stands on St Gregory’s Street, near St Gregory’s Church. It is surrounded by a paved area and a low hedge.
In June 2004, War Memorials Trust made a grant of £250 to clean the memorial.
In 2018, War Memorials Trust Grants Scheme, supported by Hopkins Homes, gave a grant of £3,290 towards conservation works to the memorial. Stonework was steam cleaned using DOFF. Damaged areas of stone were carefully cut out and new stone was indented to match existing stone type and attached using lime mortar and stainless steel pins. The memorial’s construction joints were re-pointed using an appropriate lime mortar. The bronze plaques were steam cleaned using DOFF and non-ferrous domed caps were used to re-attach them to the memorial to avoid theft and prevent the rusting and damaged caused by ferrous metal fixings.
The four dedicatory plaques on the memorial read
