Watchet Sportsmen is a memorial sports pavilion which houses memorial boards in memory of those who died in the First World War. It was dedicated in 1929 and is located in the hardbour town of Watchet, Somerset.
In 2022 a grant of £1,050 was offered through the War Memorials Trust Grants Scheme towards a survey and report with recommendations to inform necessary conservation and repair works which was undertaken by a conservation-accredited professional. The survey is intended to allow the custodian to have a better understanding of the works required and as a fundraising tool as War Memorials Trust has limited funding available for buildings.
The pavilion opened on the existing Watchet war memorial ground following fundraising for the ‘War Memorial Ground Pavilion Fund’. The pavilion cost about £720 “with grandstand, club-room, shower bath, dressing-rooms, and a kitchen.”
The inscription on the board reads: ‘When can their glory fade. They played the game. In glorious memory of Watchet Sportsmen who fell in the Great War.’
