Men of East Grinstead WWI memorial is a Grade II listed war memorial situated on the High Street, East Grinstead, West Sussex. The memorial was unveiled in 1922 and initially commemorated those from the First Second World war but dedications to the Second world war and subsequent conflicts have been added over time. The memorial itself was designed by the sculptor Ernest G Gillick of Chelsea.
In 2022 a grant of £1,880 was offered through Historic England’s Grants for War Memorials scheme which is managed by War Memorials Trust towards conservation works. The metal wires used to hold wreaths were removed, the memorial was cleaned using DOFF, a method of steam cleaning. Defective and loose mortar was carefully removed by hand and the construction joints were re-pointed using an appropriate lime mortar. The bronze on the memorial was cleaned and re-waxed using microcrystalline wax. SmartWater was applied to deter metal theft.
The memorial is a cross on an orb, set atop a tall octagonal column and octagonal plinth. Metal plaques are on each side of the memorial and record the names from the First World War. The whole is enclosed by a low wall reached by steps. In 2014 a commemorative paving stone was laid in front of the memorial in honour of Private Sidney Godley who was the first non-commissioned soldier to receive the Victoria Cross in the First World War.
