Froncysyllte war memorial fountain was erected in 1909 by public subscription to commemorate the deaths of Private William Williams of Royal Welch Fusiliers and Private John James of Grenadier Guards who died in the Second Anglo-Boer War. It was unveiled on 29 October 1910. In the 1990’s the war memorial was moved and redesigned to incorporate World War I and II marble plaques rescued from the demolished Methodist Chapel.
In 2022, a grant of £1,070 was awarded through War Memorials Trust Grant Scheme to support a conservation-accredited professional undertake a survey to ascertain the conservation works required to address the current poor condition. In complex cases such as this, an initial report can help understand works before embarking on the main project. In this case, the marble plaques were designed for an inside setting so will need different treatment to the material better designed for outdoor conditions.
The memorial is a freestanding fountain in pale green and white moulded and glazed faience blocks with dark green cast-iron drinking bowl above segmental arch. Cast emblems of the Royal Welch Fusiliers and Grenadier Guards are included.
