Heysham war memorial is a Celtic wheel cross of sandstone construction. The cross comprises a 2 stepped circular base surmounted by square plinth ornamental carvings, tapered shaft with St George slaying the dragon carved in-relief at the base of the shaft. Celtic knotwork design flanks the dedicatory inscription and arms of the cross and crown depicted in the centre of the arms of the cross. Dedication inscriptions and dates are carved in-relief with the names of the fallen incised into the face of the stone plinth. The memorial is located in St. Peter's Churchyard on Main Street, Heysham.
In 2021, Grants for War Memorials, supported by Historic England, provided £430 to assist conservation and repair work. The memorial was hand-cleaned with water using natural bristle brushes. The construction joints were carefully raked out to remove loose and flaking mortar and then re-pointed using a lime mortar. The surrounding paving stones which form the lowest step of the memorial’s base were carefully lifted and set aside. The ground below was then levelled and the paving was re-laid and pointed-up using a lime mortar.
The inscription reads:
‘1914-1919 To the glorious memory of the men of Heysham who fell in defence of their country in the Great War. The warrior heroes rest in many lands but here the symbol of their glory stands’
The memorial was unveiled in October 1920, attended by General EN Archibald Hunter MP.
