The Newland WWI war memorial in All Saints Church in Newland comprises a stone cross on a square plinth memorial set into the west wall of the church nave. Lettering is incised and painted black.
This memorial received a Professional Advice Grant of £260 through War Memorials Trust Grants Scheme in 2021. The architect’s report will be used to inform a schedule of works based on best conservation practice.
In 2024, a further grant of £2,430 was made through War Memorials Trust Grants Scheme. Repairs were carried out following the specification of works recommended in the report by the project’s conservation accredited architect. The memorial is built into the inside wall of All Saints Church, however because of earlier well-intentioned but inappropriate exterior pointing works, water was trapped with moisture was forced through the building’s stonework resulting in the migration of salts and water to the face of the memorial. This action was leading to the deterioration of the stone surface. Remedial works to these external issues were required. This included the removal of cementitious mortar pointing and re-pointing using an appropriate lime mortar. The memorial’s surface was then repaired, and the lettering was reinstated to the original design.
The inscription reads:
Remember O Lord Thy Servants Who Gave Their Lives / For Their Country In The Great War Ad 1914 - 1918 / (Names) / Eternal Rest Grant Unto Them, O Lord
