New York war memorial is a sandstone, Celtic wheel cross, with a wreath and dedication on its stem, set on a 3 stepped base. It is located on Murton Lane, New York, next to the Wheatsheaf Inn. The memorial is Grade II listed.
In 2019, £3,380 was awarded through War Memorials Trust Grants Scheme supported by the First World War Memorials Programme. It supported repair and conservation works. There was a crack in the cross, so the cross was carefully removed, and the existing ferrous fillings were removed from the base and the cross and were replaced with new stainless-steel items. The memorial was carefully de-shaled removing loose or friable material from its surface. On completion the cross was reinstated to its original position and the existing mortar was removed from the bed joints and replaced with lime-based mortar. It is important to ensure that pointing remains sound as defective joints can lead to water ingress and result in damage to the stone. Natural stone should be re-pointed with a lime-based mortar as this will allow for thermal movement and vapour transfer within the joints of the memorial which is important.
The memorial was unveiled in March 1921 by Alderman Mason of Whitney Bay. The Vicar of Shiremoor (Rev. W. Greener) conducted the memorial service.
The inscription on the memorial reads:
“To
the
glorious
dead
Erected by
the inhabitants of
the district
in memory of
the brave men who fell
in the war
1914-1919
Pass not this stone in sorrow but in pride
for they died that you might live”
