Bolsterstone war memorial is an ornately carved, sandstone, Saxon style wheel cross on a three-stepped square plinth. It is located within St Mary’s Churchyard to the south of the church. The memorial is grade II listed.
In 2018, a grant of £400 was awarded through War Memorials Trust Grants Scheme. It supported repair and conservation works which included cleaning the memorial with steam and re-pointing of joints in lime mortar to ensure that the memorial remains sound. The final grant paid was for £260 as the project costs were lower than expected.
The memorial was created in 1920 as a World War I memorial and has later additions for World War II, Korean War and Afghanistan. The memorial was erected by Messrs David Brearley and Sons and was dedicated on 16 May 1920 by the Bishop of Sheffield.
The incised inscription on the east face of the top step of the memorial reads:
"The Great War
1914-1918
To the glory of God and in proud and
loving memory of the men of this Parish
who made the supreme sacrifice for their
King and country."
“the men were very good unto us and we
were not hurt… they were a wall unto
us both by night and day.”
The west face reads:
"Remember all killed
in later conflicts
and here especially"
The lower step bears the name of the maker, "David Brearley and Sons".
