Great Bernera war memorial is a three-stepped white painted stone base surmounted by a plinth, tapered column and fleur de lys carving. The inscription is carved and in-filled in white on the sides of the plinth. It is enclosed within railings with a small gate. It is located in the main village of Breaclet, opposite the primary school, on the junction to Tacleit and Bhalasaigh.
In 2018, a grant of £4,610 was awarded through War Memorials Trust Grants Scheme supported by the First World War Memorials Programme. It supported repair and conservation works which included erecting scaffolding around the memorial and incorporating riggers to fit block and tackle to, enabling the lifting of the fleur de lis head of monument. The monument head was then lifted off and debris was cleaned out from the stalk and head. Stainless-steel dowels and resin were fitted, and the head was refitted.
Great Bernera was amongst the first places in Lewis to erect a memorial after the Great War. The sculptors were Messrs. Hood of Wick and the memorial is made from fine polished granite. It was unveiled by Angus Macdonald, 4 Lundale of the Seaforth Highlanders and Norman Macdonald, 24 Kirkibost R.N.R. The names of the fallen in World War II were added later.
The inscription on the memorial reads:
“Erected
to
commemorate the men
of this district
who made the supreme
sacrifice for King and
Country in the World War
of 1914-1918.
For the glory of God
and good of humanity
Their names shall endure
for ever
In
grateful memory of
those who fell in the
1939-1945 War.”
