Stockton Heath war memorial is a tall grey gritstone Latin cross on a square plinth. This sits on a stepped red sandstone base. It is located within a walled, York stone paved area at the northeast corner of St Thomas’ Church, Ellesmere Road. The memorial is in Stockton Heath conservation area.
In 2018, a grant of £3,200 was awarded through the Grants for War Memorials scheme supported by the First World War Memorials Programme and Historic England. It supported repair and conservation works which included the cleaning of the memorial using a conservation approved steam method. This removes deposits in a gentle manner limiting any potential damage to the memorial. The joints to the memorial had also begun to fail and needed repointing in lime mortar to ensure that water did not enter the stone resulting in damage through freeze thaw action. There were also a few stones which had become damaged which were repaired using stone indents. This ensures maximum retention of historic fabric whilst reinstating the integrity of the stone.
The memorial was unveiled and dedicated in March 1921. It cost £600 to build. A plaque engraved with the names of the fallen from the Second World War was later added to the surrounding brick wall.
