Leicester South African War memorial is a low granite wall with bronze plaques and three figures of on top. The central figure represents Peace with the figures on either end depicting grief and war. It is located within Town Hall square. The memorial is grade II listed and in Town Hall Square conservation area.

In 2017, a grant of £3,480 was awarded through Grants for War Memorials England, supported by Historic England. It supported repair and conservation works which included works to both the stone and bronze elements of the memorial. The stone required a light steam clean and repointing of the joints using an appropriate lime mortar, to ensure water couldn’t enter the structure, and the repainting of the incised inscriptions to improve their legibility. The bronze had become tarnished and required cleaning to remove corrosive deposits, followed by the application of a protective micro-crystalline wax.

SmartWater was also applied to the war memorial as part of the In Memoriam 2014 project seeking to deter the theft of metal from war memorials.

The sculptor for the memorial was Joseph Crosland McClure of Leicester Art School, and the foundry used for the bronze elements was J W Singer & Sons. The architect was John Breedon Everard.
