WM4837 Corton before works © Boyton Parish Council 2018Corton war memorial is sited in the village cemetery which is within Corton conservation area in Boyton, Wiltshire. The Chilmark stone cross stands on a site looking out over the Wylie valley with the names inscribed on the front panel to commemorate the fallen of both World Wars. The memorial was listed at Grade II in 2016 as part of Historic England's World War I centenary initiative to add 2,500 war memorials to the National Heritage List for England.

In 2018, a grant award of £7,330 was awarded from the Grants for War Memorials scheme supported by Historic England, the First World War Memorials Programme and the Wolfson Foundation. This supported cleaning of the memorial and re-pointing with lime. In addition, structural works were required due to the settlement of the land, a common challenge for war memorials within burial grounds. Some stone repairs and indents were undertaken to the memorial with stone to match the existing and lime mortar. As costs fell during the project the final grant awarded was £7,295.

WM4837 Corton after works © Boyton Parish Council 2018The applicants for a grant advised that "the memorial was built through public subscription in 1920. It was subsequently maintained by the Parochial Church Council for St Mary's Boyton through a war memorial fund run by the Rev Edward Stewart, whose son is named on the memorial. This fund appears to have been wound up in 1964. Since then the parish council has organised repair and maintenance on an as required basis. The decision to undertake work on the war memorial was reached following a survey of parishioners in 2015. The parish council agreed to coordinate the project. This was supported by the PCC."

At the unveiling service on 30th May 1920 it is reported that Field Marshall Lord Grenfell closed his speech with the words, “I trust this memorial may remain forever where it now stands as a monument to the good conduct and gallantry of these men whose names are carved into it.”
