Harwich Merchant Navywar memorial © A Bradbury, 2009The Merchant Navy Seafarers’ Memorial at Harwich, Essex is a 15 ft granite obelisk on an integral plinth with a two-stepped base. It stands on the quay at Harwich Harbour where it is visible to passing ships. On two faces of the shaft is the badge of the Merchant Navy, and there is also an inscription.

In August 2004 War Memorials Trust gave £250 towards the commissioning of the memorial. Although Harwich has a long history of merchant seafaring, there had until that time been no memorial dedicated to those of the Merchant Navy who had fallen in war.

The memorial was dedicated on Sunday 3rd September 2006 – National Merchant Navy Day – by Padre John Appleby and it was unveiled by Lord Petre, Lord Lieutenant of Essex. The event was attended by around 1000 people.
