Withersfield war memorial is made of Portland stone and is in the form of a Latin cross on top of a tapering obelisk. It is located on the Village Green, Withersfield. The memorial is grade II listed.
In 2017, a grant of £1070 was awarded through War Memorials Trust Grants Scheme. It supported repair and conservation works which included steam cleaning the war memorial and undertaking stone repairs using indents. The memorial was also re-pointed and the inscriptions were re-painted using black enamel to improve their legibility.
The memorial was sculpted by Mr E C Green and was unveiled on 12th August 1921.
The memorial commemorates 15 local men who lost their lives in World War I and further names were added after World War II. The inscription on the memorial reads:
“In memory of
the glorious
sacrifice
of the men of
Withersfield
who fell in
the Great War
1914 – 1919”
“Let those that come after
see their names be not forgotten”.
