This war memorial comprises a bronze figure of Peace surmounting a carved classical plinth and single step of limestone construction; the bronze figure is crowned with a laurel wreath and holds a scroll in the left hand and a laurel wreath in the outstretched right hand. The plinth incorporates classical detailing including Corinthian leaf cornice-cum-frieze and centred laurel wreath with carving of St George and dragon roundel to the front elevation. Bronze plaques recessed and attached to each side of the plinth carry names and dedication; further inscriptions are incised into the base of the plinth. The memorial is surrounded by traditional flag stone paving and segmented roll-top moulded stone edged borders arranged on a circular plan. The memorial is located in the centre of the town of Wallingford and is integrated into the site of the former market square.
In 2018 War Memorials Trust gave a grant of £5,440 towards the undertaking of conservation works. The stonework and bronze were cleaned using the steam cleaning system DOFF. A protective microcrystalline wax was then applied to the surface of the bronze. Defective/loose mortar from the memorial’s construction joints was carefully raked out then re-pointed using a lime mortar. Consolidative lime mortar repairs to damaged areas of stone were also carried out. Surrounding flag stones were also repaired as part of works to the memorial.
The memorial commemorates the residents of Wallingford who were killed or missing in World War I (81 names) and World War II (36 names). The memorial was designed by Guy Dewber and constructed by builder-William Honeybone. The memorial was unveiled on 22nd May 1921.
The inscription reads:
To the glory of God
and in honoured and
grateful memory of
the men of
Wallingford
who laid down
their lives
in the Great War
1914-1919
Their name liveth
for evermore
Pass not this stone
in Sorrow but in pride
and strive to live as
nobly as they died
1939-1945
