Hungerford war memorial is a tall column on a square base. At the top of the column is an orb with a small Latin cross on top. It is located in the memorial gardens, Hungerford. The memorial is in Hungerford conservation area.
In 2018, a grant of £1,120 was awarded through War Memorials Trust Grants Scheme. It supported repair and conservation works which included cleaning which was needed as there was a significant build-up of biological deposits and the bronze plaques had corroded resulting in Verdigris staining to the stone. The cleaning was undertaken using a combination of steam cleaning and poultices to draw out the staining. The bronze plaques were also steam cleaned before the application of a protective micro-crystalline wax. As part of the project the failed joints on the memorial were repointed using a lime mortar.
SmartWater was also applied to the war memorial as part of the In Memoriam 2014 project seeking to deter the theft of metal from war memorials.
The memorial was dedicated on 24th April 1921.
The inscription on the memorial reads:
“In humble gratitude
to Almighty God
who granted us
victory
and in loving memory
of the men of this
town who fell
in the Great Wars
1914-1919 & 1939-1945”
