Sway war memorial is two-stepped base surmounted by square plinth, tapering shaft and Celtic cross. It is located at the junction of Durnstown and Pitmore Lane. The memorial is Grade II listed.
In 2018, £2,910 was awarded through War Memorials Trust Grants Scheme supported by the First World War Memorials Programme. It assisted repair and conservation works which included stone cleaning of the memorial using a DOFF system and careful removal of the defective mortar from the memorial’s joints and re-pointing with an appropriate lime mortar. The lettering was re-painted using an appropriate oil-based paint in a colour to match the existing and the damage to the concrete surround was made good.
SmartWater was also applied to the war memorial as part of the In Memoriam 2014 project seeking to deter the theft of metal from war memorials.
The memorial was erected by Messrs W A Hoare Sculptors of Bournemouth and was unveiled on 10th May 1921.
The inscription on the memorial reads:
“1914
1919
1939-1945
To the glory of God
and in grateful memory of
the men of Sway who fell
in the Great War
Sons of this place let this of you be said
that you who live are worthy of your dead.
These gave their lives that you who live may reap
a richer harvest ere you fall asleep.”
