Lowton St Luke’s war memorial is located at the junction of Slag Lane and Church Lane in Lowton, Cheshire. It is a tall sandstone pillar with a small cross at the top. This stands on a square plinth a top a two-stepped base. The inscriptions in raised lettering on bronze plaques commemorate those who died World War I and II. It is Grade II listed by virtue of being within the curtilage of the listed church.
In 2018, a grant of £13,170 was awarded from the Grants for War Memorials scheme supported by The Wolfson Foundation. It supported steam cleaning to improve the legibility of the inscriptions, re-pointing in lime mortar, stone indents to repair areas of shaling stone, re-setting of some stone slabs and waxing of the bronze plaques. As part of the In Memoriam 2014 initiative SmartWater was applied as a condition of the grant to deter theft.
The memorial was dedicated in November 1921. The architect was Arthur John Hope Esq FRIBA. Stone work was undertaken by Mr Darlington whilst the bronze plaques were the work of Mr Edmondson. The marble open book that sits in front of the World War I inscription was added after World War II.
Inscriptions include:
To the memory of our glorious dead 1914 - 1919
Also in honour of parishioners who fell in World War Two 1939 - 1945
