WM918 Eastcombe obelisk before works © Bisley-With-Lypiatt Parish Council 2017Eastcombe war memorial comprises three circular steps surmounted by a triangular chamfered obelisk with circular corniced sill course and is constructed of Cotswold limestone. A dedication inscription and the names of the fallen are incised into the face of the stone. The memorial is located in the Upper Chapel graveyard on Dr Crouchs Road in the centre of East Combe village and is accessed by footpath.

In 2018, War Memorials Trust offered a grant of £1,710 towards conservation works to clean the memorial using natural bristle brushes and water. In addition the memorial’s construction joints were repointed using a lime mortar. Inappropriate cementitious mortar repairs to the memorial which were causing damage to the stonework were carefully removed and repairs were carefully re-executed using a lime mortar and eroded sections of stone were consolidated using lime mortar. The lettering on the memorial had become difficult to read and so illegible or damaged sections were re-incised and all lettering was re-painted using an appropriate oil based paint.
