The war memorial consists of a freestanding octagonal plinth which is crenelated, supporting a column surmounted by a lion holding a shield with arms of Millport. The panels of the plinth include Rolls of Honour from the First and Second World Wars, in addition two are decorated with an engraved sword and wreath. One side is blank. Atop the columns between each of the eight panels are thistles. Surrounding the memorial is a black metal fence with the arms of Millport and badge of the British Legion on the gate. The memorial stands on the seafront near the junction of Guildford Street and Clifton Street.
In 2017 War Memorials Trust offered a grant of £3,520 for conservation and repair works. The memorial had a build-up on soiling and biological growth and a number of the construction joints were open or had cracked mortar. The inscription was becoming difficult to read as the paintwork on the lead letters was failing. Corrosion could also be seen on the surrounding railings which has been caused by defective paint work. The grant funding supported works to re-point the memorial’s construction joints and to clean it. The lead lettering of the inscription and the surrounding ironwork fencing was re-painted.
The memorial by Robert Gray sculptors of Glasgow is identical in design to the Newton Mearns Memorial in Glasgow by the same company. The memorial was unveiled on 15th October 1922.
