The war memorial chapel was built in the gap between a high rubble boundary wall and the cliff like south nave wall of St Anne’s Episcopal Church. Like the church, it has a pitched roof and red sandstone walls, on the west wall there is a 2 light war memorial window. The chapel is only accessible from the main church through a set of First World War commemorative gates. Contained within the small chapel, which is only 2.5m x 5.3m, are a number of non-freestanding memorials including a carved oak First World War retable which has card insets with a roll on honour, a First World War commemorative sandstone tablet with incised lettering and three brass plaques commemorating individual soldiers, Malcolm Roy Wingate, Captain Edward A Marrow and Lt Col Smith.
In 2016/17 War Memorials Trust offered two grant totalling £24,680 for conservation and repair works to both the war memorial chapel and the associated non freestanding war memorial. The war memorial chapel had a number of issues, the stonework pointing was defective and small areas of stone work had eroded, water penetration had was occurring at the south and east walls and there were concerns about the structure of the chapel. In addition there were water drainage issues at roof level and works were required to address an issue with the floor. The grant funding supported works to address these issues, re-pointing and selected stone replacement at the stained glass window were undertaken, the roof was stripped and re-slated new leadwork and rainwater goods were installed. Alterations were made to the drainage system, which on investigation were identified as the cause of the issues at the east wall and with floor. Internally the walls were lime re plastered.
In addition to the chapel works, the stained glass window was removed broken/missing sections of glass were replaced along with sections of the leadwork, before being re-installed the window was cleaned, a new protective grille was installed to protect the glass. The sandstone and brass plaques, were cleaned and repairs were undertaken to the timber retable and the card insets were conserved.
St Anne’s war memorial chapel was designed by architect Gilbert Ogilivy and was completed in 1919. The chapel was dedicated in June 1920.
