Portree war memorial consists of a freestanding hexangonal plinth with incised granite slabs, surmounting the plinth is a parapet with further memorial plaques. Rising from the plinth is a hexagonal granite column and supports a granite sculpture of a deated lion. This memorial is catergory B listed structure.
In 2017, War Memorials Trust offered a grant of £1,050 through the Centenary Memorials Restoration Fund (CMRF)for a professional survey of the condition of the war memorial to be undertaken and for a specification of works to be drawn up for required repair and conservation works.
Following that report a further grant award was made through the CMRF of £22,680 for the required repair and conservation works identified. Having undertaken the initial assessment a full tender could be run and the comprehensive programme of works included installation of new lead capping to the roof, re-pointing of the whole memorial structure with lime mortar, steam cleaning of the entire memorial and re-painting of the lettering to improve legibility. In addition, the metal elements were protected with SmartWater as part of the In Memoriam 2014 initiative.
The Portree war memorial was dedicated on 16th February 1922. The design was by John Wittet of Elgin and is based on the Mercat Cross of Edinburgh. It was built by local builder Thomas MacFarlane, whose only son was killed at Festubert and is commemorated on the memorial.
