American Monument © Islay Museum Trust, 2017The American Monument takes the form of a stone built tower that is supposed to represent a lighthouse.  It has a conical top and there are two rows of inset squares near the top, presumably representation of lights.  There are steps that lead to the brass inscription plaque mounted at the base of the tower.  Above the plaque is a bronze American eagle clutching a wreath in both talons.  Two thirds up the tower is a round flat stone inscribed with 1918.  The memorial is situated close to high sliffs on the Mull of Oa which is on the South East of the Island of Islay.

In 2017 War Memorials Trust offered a grant of American Monument repairs © Islay Museum Trust, 2017£590 for the repair of the monuments lighting conductor which had been damaged.  To address the issues a new section of tape was installed at the base on the monument and the system was tested.  The lightening tape was then marked with SmartWater, a crime prevention fluid.

The monument was designed by Robert Walker and was built by George Reid & Son.  It is though that the monument was dedicated in 1920.
