The war memorial consists of a freestanding stand stone pillar with decorative carvings surmounted by a heraldic lion and shield. The pillar rises from a large octagonal plinth with inset granite inscription plaques and two carved panels, it is raised from ground level on a stepped base. It is located in a hard landscaped area on Hairst Street.
In 2017 War Memorials Trust offered a grant of £3,970 for conservation and repair works. The memorial had a number of defective and open construction joints which were allowing water to get into the memorial. The stone work had a built up of soiling and there were areas of salt deposits on its surface. The paintwork on the surrounding chain has deteriorated and there are uneven sections of paving at the base of the memorial. The grant funding supported works to appropriately clean the stonework, repair the
surrounding paving and re-point the memorial with a lime mortar. The timber access hatch and chain was also be repainted.
Unfortunately little is known about the history of the war memorial.
The main inscription on the plinth of the memorial reads:
