The war memorial consists of a freestanding granite octagonal plinth with a bronze band, and a shield shaped plaque with dates raised off the ground on a three stepped base. The inscription is formed in lead lettering. Surmounting the plinth is octagonal pillar with carved shields and a bronze unicorn which holds a shield bearing a saltire.
In 2017 War Memorials Trust offered a grant of £3,960 for conservation and repair works. The memorial had historically suffered from structural movement which has caused construction joints to crack and open up. Soiling on the surface of the stone along with missing or damaged lead letters was making the inscription on the memorial difficult to read. The bronze statue required cleaning and re-waxing to prevent corrosion. The grant funding will support works to re-point the construction joints which will be monitored to ensure that there is no new movement in the structure. The bronze and stone elements were appropriately cleaned and the missing and damaged lead letters were replaced to match the existing.
Unfortunately little is known about the history of the memorial. The inscriptions on the front elevation of the plinth on the memorial reads:

1939-1945
