This war memorial comprises a marble plaque with incised lettering painted in black acrylic paint. The memorial is set into the front red-brick elevation of the Church of the Sacred Heart Roman Catholic church in Newhaven.
In 2017 War Memorials Trust gave a grant of £340 towards the undertaking of conservation works to re-paint the lettering which had become illegible using black acrylic paint to match the original design.
The inscription reads:
I.H.S./ Sacred To The Memory Of The Captain And Crew Of The S.S. "Maine" Which Was Lost By Mine Or Torpedo Between Newhaven And Dieppe On The Feast Of The Presentation Of The B.V.M. November 21st 1917/ (Names)/ Requiescant In Pace/ Erected By The Transports' Captains And Friends Of The Above.
