Brookeborough war memorial is two-stepped sandstone base surmounted by a highly carved limestone pedestal with arabesque detailing and an incised dedication to the fallen of the South African War. Atop this a pedestal supports a crouching lion supporting a shield bearing the badge of the Royal Inniskilling Fusiliers. The names of the fallen from World Wars I and II are listed on a modern wedge plinth at the base of the memorial having replaced a dedicatory plaque to the dead which did not list names. In 2004, the war memorial was moved from the middle of the main street in Brookeborough to the footpath nearby to reduce the threat of vehicle damage.
In 2017, War Memorials Trust offered a grant of £7,460, through the First World War Memorials Programme, towards works to clean the memorial using natural bristle brushes and a mild soap detergent. Cleaning was followed by the careful removal of defective/loose mortar from the memorial’s construction joints which were repointed with a lime mortar. The stone had become eroded with the carvings and inscriptions particularly fragile so further incising was deemed inappropriate as it had gone beyond the stage of being able to be worked upon. A wedge-shaped sandstone plinth was installed at the front of memorial with a new cast bronze plaque with World War I and World War II names. Four new sandstone corner posts were also installed to offer protection.
The war memorial was dedicated in 1901. The carved inscription from the South African War reads:
"Sergt. William Browne Royal Inniskilling Fusiliers William G. Palmer Prince Alfred’s Volr. Guard Robert Noble Royal Army Medical Corps. This Monument Has Been Erected By Public Subscription In Memory Of Soldiers Of Brookeborough And The Vicinity Who Laid Down Their Lives In The South African War 1899 - 1901"
