In 2015 a grant of £30,000 was offered for repair and conservation work. At the time the grant was awarded the lychgate was inaccessible to the public as it is considered dangerous. The roof tiles had been removed as many were loose and were at risk of falling. The timber structure was suffering from extensive rot and there was also water damage, and elements missing. In addition, the cement
pointing was either badly cracked or missing. To address these issues works were undertaken to repair and conserve the memorial in order that it could be opened to the public once more. Rotting and missing timbers were replaced. Stonework was re-pointed with a lime mortar. The roof tiles were sorted and those suitable for reuse were re-fixed and like-for-like replacements were used where tiles were missing. The missing gates
were recreated based on historical evidence and these were fixed back into their original locations.
Unfortunately little is known about the history of the lychgate memorial or its designer. However it is known that it was erected at the entrance to the Tullibody war memorial garden as a tribute from those who had served to those who had died. On the walls inside the gate two panels bore the names of the 158 people from Cambus, Tullibody and the surrounding area who had served in the War.
Tullibody War Memorial Garden consists of a landscaped garden. A path leads from the lychgate through the garden to the main war memorial, created by re-using a huge glacial erratic known locally as the ‘Haer Stane’ or ‘Samson’s Button’, which had once been at the centre of a Neolithic stone circle. A large granite slab carved with a ‘Celtic’ wheel-head cross was inserted into the top of the Haer Stane, which was surrounded by a decorative, spring-fed pond. The land for the garden was donated by the local landowner Major Kennedy Tullis. The garden was planted with flower beds, trees and bushes and seats made of teak from old battleships and inscribed with the titles of major battles of the war were also placed around it. The war memorial garden was created with funding raised by public subscription and opened by General Sir Francis J Davies KCB, KCMG, KCVO on 2nd October 1921 in front of c 3,000 spectators. It commemorated the 27 men from Tullibody and Cambus who had given their lives during the War.
