This war memorial comprises a decoratively carved stone wheel cross on straight shaft, octagonal plinth and two-stepped octagonal base. The inscription and names are incised into the faces of the plinth. The memorial is located in the northwest corner of St Thomas' churchyard in Winchelsea. The memorial commemorates the Parish’s Fallen from WWI and WWII.
In 2016 War Memorials Trust offered a grant of £2,140 towards the undertaking of conservation works to the Grade II Listed structure. Works were carried out to clean the memorial using natural bristle brushes, soap and low pressure water washing. Loose and failing mortar was raked-out from the memorials joints, and joints were repointed using a lime mortar. Thorough research, supported by sufficient records and documentation demonstrated that one of the names incised on the memorial had been misspelt and this was corrected using typeface to match original.
The decision to erect a memorial was taken at a public meeting in Winchelsea on 24 January 1919, organised by an ad hoc committee under churchwarden, Mr Charles Campion, and was funded by public subscription. The memorial was dedicated on 7 November 1920 in the presence of the Earl Beauchamp, Lord Warden of the Cinque Ports. It is believed that the memorial was designed and erected by Burslem Stonemasons of Tunbridge Wells, although they do not have records from this period.
