Arden Family war memorial calvary cSt Peters Parochial Church Council, 2016Arden Family war memorial is located at St Peter’s Churchyard, Yoxall, Burton on Trent, Staffordshire. This memorial is a sandstone Calvary cross on a fluted stem set on a robust square plinth with a coloured crest on a dedicatory stone front. The memorial stands on a two stepped octagonal base. The incised inscription on the plinth commemorates Humphrey W. Arden who was buried at Bailleul, France during WWI. The memorial is listed by virtue of being within the curtilage of the Grade II listed church and is within Yoxall Conservation Area.

In 2016 a grant of £6,040 was awarded through the War Memorials Trust Grants Scheme towards replacement of the cracked sandstone shaft with a new stone shaft to match, re-fixing the Calvary on to the cross using stainless steel dowels and lime mortar pointing. This was supervised by a conservation accredited architect. SmartWater was later applied to metal elements.

The memorial was constructed after WWI at the direction of Revd William Henry Percival Arden and his wife Emily in memory of their only surviving child, who was killed at Messines on 6th June 1917 at the age of 25.
