Burnhope war memorial is located in Burnhope Garden of Remembrance, Holmside Lane, Burnhope, County Durham. The memorial comprises a Garden of Remembrance surrounded by a u-shaped single-storey brick wall with brick piers, a clay tile roof with a raised central gateway, and nine Rolls of Honour bearing the names of those fallen from the First and Second World Wars. The roof overhangs at the centre of the memorial where it is supported by timber beams over eight recesses for benches. The central gateway has a pair of heavy wrought iron gates and is surmounted with a cross finial.
In 2016 a grant of £2,950 was awarded through the War Memorials Trust Grants Scheme towards a detailed condition survey and report with recommendations for conservation and repair which was undertaken by a conservation-accredited professional advisor.
In 2017 a grant of £63,330 was awarded through the War Memorials Trust Grants Scheme towards reroofing in matching clay tiles, repairs to the timber support structure and repairs to the timber cross finial located over the central gateway, repointing with lime mortar, repairs and new cast iron rainwater goods, repairs and repainting of the lead inscriptions on inlaid sandstone plaques, repairs and repainting gates, repairs to gullies, replacement of broken kerbs and new coping to low wall to prevent water ingress. SmartWater was applied to metal elements as a condition of the grant.
The memorial was designed by Cacket and Burns Dick Architects of Newcastle upon Tyne and built by Messrs Ayton of Blackhill. The memorial was unveiled on 9th September 1920. The design was based on a common design of French farms of the 1914-1918 period. The memorial cost £1340-19s-4d, and was paid for by the local colliery
owner Mr Utrick A. Ritson, on land owned by Miss Allgood. The National Coal Board carried out a programme of repair before the end of 1950 when a Garden of Remembrance was created. Mr Allgood gave the land to the local council. Three additional sandstone Rolls of Honour were added to commemorate servicemen on the Northwest Frontier of India (1930) and those lost in WWII. The latter were unveiled on 10th June 1950.
