Knottingley war memorial is located near St Botolph’s Church on Chapel Street in Knottingley, West Yorkshire. The memorial is a bronze sculpture of a winged angel with one foot on an orb holding a trumpet and a wreath. It stands on a tall tapered square shaft and two stage granite plinth atop three steps. The inscription is in raised lead lettering painted black commemorating those who died in World War I and World War II. It is a Grade II listed structure.
In 2016 a grant of £1,195 was offered through War Memorials Trust Grants Scheme towards a Professional Advice Grant for the inspection of the memorial. Following this a Condition Survey report was produced alongwith a summary of methods for repair. A War Memorials Trust Conservation Officer visited the memorial to discuss the report following completion. This was a chance to discuss the proposals and identify the next steps to improve the condition of this memorial.
In 2018, a further grant of £19,000 was awarded through Grants for War Memorials. Repairs addressed issues with the sculpture including corroded ferrous dowel and other armature. It was cleaned inside to reduce the risk of future damage and broken areas were repaired.
The memorial was designed by a local person G. H. Fairbairn and was unveiled by Col Moxon in 1921.
