WM2094 Waterloo, Billinge obelisk © WMT, 2015The Battle of Waterloo war memorial is located at Bispham Hall Scout Estate on Crank Road in Billinge near Wigan, Lancashire. It is a tall sandstone obelisk with a ball finial which stands on a square plinth that carry oval inscription panels. The incised inscription commemorates the Duke of Wellington and the victors of Waterloo. It is a Grade II listed structure.

In 2015 a grant of £22,860 was awarded through War Memorials Trust Grants Scheme towards repairs to the leaning structure. This involved dismantling and rebuilding the structure including replacement of cast iron cramps with stainless steel. Some stone repairs were also undertaken with all required pointing undertaken in lime mortar. Parts of the inscription were also re-carved. as the project costs were in excess of £10,000 a conservation-accredited professional advisor oversaw the project and some of those fees were also eligible for grant support. Waterloo memorial, Billinge after works © Jubb and Jubb 2016The actual costs were lower than forecast so the actual grant paid was £21,850 when paid in October 2016 as War Memorials Trust will normally pay up to 75% of eligible costs.

The memorial was erected in 1816 by the owners of the Bispham Hall estate, the brothers John and Robert Holt. Inscriptions are in English and Latin to the plinth and to oval panels to the sides, including lists of victorious generals.

The inscription on the front reads:

"To the
most noble and illustrious
Arthur
