St Luke and St Silas World War I memorial (WM8436) and St Luke's Church World War I memorial (WM8437) are located inside the Parish Church of St Paul on Church Street in Manningham, West Yorkshire. The memorial for St Luke and St Silas is a single wooden plaque with a Maltese cross at each of the top corners. The inscription is in black and gold paint commemorating 92 people who died in World War I. St Luke’s Church memorial is a dedicatory wooden board divided into four panels with many names inscribed on them in red and black lettering.
As the two memorials are within the same church and the scale of the project was small the grant application was assessed as one application to cover both projects. This was discussed at an early stage of the Grants Pre-application enquiry process ensuring that the administration level associated with the project was appropriate for both the applicant and the charity.
In 2015, a grant of £420 was awarded jointly to WM8436 and WM8437 through War Memorials Trust Grants Scheme. For the purpose of recording this was seen as a 50/50 split so each record on this Showcase records a sum of £205 as the actual grant paid was £410 due to a fall in expected costs. The works included minor repairs to lettering and re-varnishing. The memorials were also relocated as part of a wider project from a locked, leaking porch to the south wall of the chancel.
The St Luke and St Silas plaque was originally located in the Mission Church of St Luke and St Silas. It is then believed to have been moved to St Luke's Church on Fairfield Street in Manningham. When St Luke's Church closed around 1984 all the memorials were moved into St Paul's Church when the parishes merged thus ensuring that today's congregation is remembering all those from the various preceding congregations that now make up their church.
