Blanefield/Strathblane after works © Strathblanefield Community Council 2016The memorial consists of a four-sided plinth sitting on a two-tiered base. A slender shaft, with intricately carved detail, is finished with a Celtic cross. The plinth has alcoves on each side inset with panels, three of which are inscribed with the names of the fallen from the parish. The forth panel offers a general inscription to their memory. A slender shaft, with intricately carved detail, is finished with a Celtic cross. The plinth sits on a two-tiered base with a paved path and is set within a composed small walled garden that sits at the junction of Dene Road and Glasgow Road. The memorial is made of Doddington sandstone.

In 2016, a grant of £2,410 was offered for repair and conservation work. Works included the cleaning of the memorial, paving and steps using water and natural bristle brushes. Defective mortar was carefully unpicked and joints were repointed using a lime based mortar. The uneven pathway flags were removed to make good the base and then laid back in place using an appropriate lime mortar. Some deepening and sharpening of deteriorated lettering was undertaken. Finally, works to remove defective mortar from the boundary wall and then repoint the pinning joints were also supported.

Blanefield/Strathblane before works © War Memorials Trust 2011The memorial was unveiled on 21st August 1921 by His Grace the Duke of Montrose. It was designed by distinguished Scottish architect Robert Lorimer (1864-1929), designer of the Scottish War Memorial in Edinburgh. The memorial was paid for by a subscription of £800.

The dedication on the war memorial reads:

"Sacred to
the memory
of those from
the parish of
Strathblane
who fell in
the Great War

Their name
liveth
for ever more"
