East Howle and Crossings war memorial is located at Town Hall Gardens, Ferryhill, County Durham. This memorial is a Cornish granite Celtic cross with carved stone decoration on a tapering shaft atop a chamfered plinth standing on a square Yorkstone base. The inscription on the plinth in lead lettering commemorates those who died in both World War I and World War II.
In 2015 a grant of £1,130 was offered through War Memorials Trust Grants Scheme towards cleaning with steam. In addition, to improve the legibility of the inscription the lead lettering was re-painted in-line with the evidence provided. Construction joined were also re-pointed with lime mortar pointing. As part of the In Memoriam 2014 initiative it was confirmed SmartWater had been applied to the lead lettering to deter theft.
The cross was relocated to the Town Hall Gardens from East Howle, a small mining settlement. The inscription states:
“Pass not this stone in sorrow, but in pride,
And may you live as nobly as they died”
