Chelford war memorial base before work © Susan Roycroft, 2014The memorial consists of a Calvary cross surmounting a square plinth all constructed from Portland stone. The memorial is set in a recess of the St John the Evangelist Church, next to the main A535.

In 2014 a grant of £740 was offered for repair and conservation work. The memorial was in poor condition, cracks in the plinth and base were allowing water in and soiling was distracting from the aesthetics of the memorial. To address these issues the memorial was stream cleaned, damaged sections of the base where replaced on a Chelford war memorial after work © Chelford PCC, 2014like for like basis and the memorial was repointed with a lime mortar.

The memorial was a gift of a Mr F M S Grant, whose son returned safely from the First World War. He gave it in memory of others local men who they knew did not survive. The Calvary was the executed by Mr A G Walker of Cedar Studios, Pleb Place Chelsea, who became an associate of the Royal Academy in 1925. It was unveiled on 20th December 1921 by Colonel Sir George Dixon Burt and dedicated by Bishop Mercer. Ex-servicemen of the district marched to the Church. The service was taken by the Rev W H Parks.
